Production Overview

Cumbernauld Theatre is excited to announce an upcoming Main Stage production of “The Events” by David Greig, scheduled for October 2024. “The Events” is a powerful and thought-provoking play that delves into themes of community, forgiveness, and incomprehensible brutality in the aftermath of a traumatic event. We are seeking a talented and visionary Director to lead this production and bring the play’s themes to life on our stage.

  • Choir Development: April – June 2024 (Dates TBC)
  • Rehearsal Period: 2 September – 30 September 2024
  • Performance Dates: 1 – 5 October 2024
  • Location: Cumbernauld Theatre, Scotland

ROLE OF THE DIRECTOR

The Director will play a crucial role in shaping the artistic vision of the production, working closely with the creative team and cast to bring “The Events” to the stage in a compelling and emotionally resonant manner. The Director’s responsibilities will include:

  • Developing a clear and innovative directorial concept for the production.
  • Conducting auditions and selecting the cast in collaboration with the casting team.
  • Leading rehearsals and facilitating a collaborative and creative atmosphere.
  • Engaging and collaborating with the designer and overseeing technical aspects of the production.
  • Working closely with the production team to ensure a cohesive and impactful presentation.
  • Providing guidance and support to actors in the exploration of their characters and the play’s themes.
  • Liaising with the choir leader to ensure a coherent vision and use of the community choir throughout.
  • Working with members of the local community as part of the community choir.
  • Maintaining a respectful and inclusive working environment for all cast and crew members.
  • Collaborating with the marketing and publicity team to promote the production within the community.

Essential Requirements

We are looking for a Director with:

  • Proven experience in directing theatre productions, preferably with a background in contemporary drama.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • A passion for working with a diverse group of artists and fostering a collaborative creative process.
  • A deep understanding of the themes and nuances of “The Events” and an ability to bring them to the forefront.
  • Experience in working with non-professional actors in a community setting.
  • Commitment to the production’s rehearsal and performance schedule.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience working with choirs or choruses.

Note: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their proposals on Wednesday 6 December 2023. The invitations to Pitch will be issued no later than Friday 1 December 2023, giving applicants time to prepare. Please note all directors invited to take part in the pitch sessions will be paid £65 per pitch.
