Cumbernauld Theatre has served our community for over 60 years, and we have until the end of this year to secure its future.

Each year we stage over 150 live performances, we deliver more than 400 community classes, and we welcome 50,000 local people through our doors. This is where young people come to gain confidence, older generations to dance, emerging musicians to cut their teeth, and theatre and cinema fans to access world-class performance close to home.

Next year marks Cumbernauld’s 70th anniversary as a New Town. We want to be at the heart of those celebrations with a full programme rooted in creativity, community and connection. Without urgent support, the 70th year of this town could instead see the closure of this cultural asset for good.

In January 2025, our application for continued multi-year funding from Creative Scotland was unsuccessful. Since then, under new leadership, we have developed a sustainable plan that puts the community at its heart and ensures that youth and community projects can thrive alongside a programme of touring theatre and music.

Despite months of constructive talks, Creative Scotland has confirmed that transition funding will not be extended into 2026. Without further support, Cumbernauld Theatre will not be able to continue beyond next year. To continue, we need to raise £300,000 by the end of this year. We are actively working with government, funders and companies hoping to secure a significant share of this, but community donations will be essential to bridge the gap.

The people of Cumbernauld deserve better. One unsuccessful application should not mean the loss of the area’s only theatre and cinema, more than 40 jobs, and creative opportunities that have supported generations.

We are asking the Scottish Government, Creative Scotland and North Lanarkshire Council to work with us on a solution. This is your theatre. Help us protect its future.
