Spoken Word

Chatterbox is about the labels we give children in primary school and the lasting damage those words can cause.

When I first started school, I was called “stupid” simply because I could not speak English. Growing up in Glasgow as a young migrant child, language became both a barrier and a marker of difference, shaping how I was seen and how I learned to see myself.

This early experience of being silenced, mislabelled and misunderstood sits at the heart of the work. The piece explores how those labels can follow us into adulthood, shaping confidence, voice and identity, and how kindness—or the absence of it—can have a lifelong impact. Chatterbox also reflects on how bullying is not always confined to the playground, and how children often develop hidden coping strategies to survive environments that fail to protect them.

The performance will be followed by a 40-minute post-show Q&A.
