CUMBERNAULD THEATRE – WHAT WE DO

Working at the heart of our community we are invested in defining our creativity and culture together, in delivering an arts programme that enhances our life, broadens our perspective and nurtures performance arts skills for a creative, innovative, fairer Scotland.

We are a theatre that produces plays, musicals and events with Directors and Performing arts professionals from across Scotland and the UK. Our mission is to make theatre that is relevant to our community and portrays our lived experience. Our process invites people from our community to be part of the making of Theatre and to work with Theatre Directors, Actors, Designers and Managers who are similarly invested.

We openly value lived experience. Difference. Challenge. Change.

We are a professional producing theatre, but our approach is distinctly non-traditional. It is an approach that is rooted in our proud history as leaders in the community arts movement of the 1970’s and 1980’s.  We ask the artists we create with to understand our local troubles and challenges. We aim to make our town a better place through our creative ideas and practice, by questioning what has always been the same and by celebrating those who have been missing from our stages.

We are a Theatre that seeks to bring the best of Scotland’s independent Theatre and Contemporary Dance to our audience, the challenging, the experimental, the moving and the funny. We are particularly keen to support multi-disciplinary creative teams; works that speak to the experience of our minority group audiences; practitioners who are exploring socially engaged practice and ‘slow-touring’.

We support new music and emerging bands, contemporary Scottish folk and singer-songwriters by providing a welcoming, state of the art performance space.

And we are a Theatre that offers lots of ways to take part, from youth drama and dance to photography for older people and Sensory Play for our little ones. Please visit our Take Part pages to learn about more ways to get involved.
