We open with Mendelssohn’s evocative retelling of a Medieval legend in which a water-nymph attempts to hide her true form from her human husband. There’s a happier outcome to Strauss’ Duet Concertino, in which the clarinet and bassoon are cast in Beauty and the Beast-like roles.
Beethoven’s Symphony No 4 finds this often-irascible composer in a mischievous mood. With a final movement that could come from a Looney Tunes cartoon, it makes for a wonderfully fun end to the concert.
