People came together at Lanternhouse on Sunday 10 May for the first of our Community Gatherings, a free day of food, film, music and creative activity celebrating global majority cultures. The event welcomed people of all ages to take part, try something new and spend time together.
Across the day, visitors took part in acting workshops led by Atta Yaqub, supported by Iman Akhtar, and dance workshops with Divine Tasinda from THREE60 Dance Company, enjoyed live music from Amit Sumal, shared food from Victoria Kildoh of Ndada’s Kitchen and Dr Saqib Razzaq’s South Asian food offering, and rounded off the day with a screening of Umrao Jaan, introduced by Alina Mirza of Tongues on Fire and the UK Asian Film Festival. Thanks to everyone who joined us and to all the artists, partners and community connectors who helped make the day possible, including Cumbernauld Rotary Club and Janiece Ndoye from North Lanarkshire Ethnic Minority Association (NLEMA).
The Community Gatherings form part of Cumbernauld’s 70th anniversary programme and a wider project exploring experiences of community, identity and belonging. The project is supported through Creative Scotland’s Open Fund.
