It has been a month since we relaunched the Save Cumbernauld Theatre campaign, so we wanted to share an update on where things stand and what is coming next.
Our community fundraising total is now nearing £20,000 toward our £50,000 community goal. This sits within a wider £300,000 funding gap that we need to raise by the end of the year to ensure Cumbernauld Theatre Trust can continue operating next year. Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared the campaign or supported collections. Every contribution helps both with real financial sustainability and by showing how much Cumbernauld Theatre Trust means to its communities.
Alongside community giving, we have submitted a significant application to the Creative Scotland Open Fund for A Town for Tomorrow Today, our 70th anniversary programme. The project places local people at its heart through creative workshops in local areas, opportunities to co-curate open days at Lanternhouse and a large community production sharing the town’s stories and hopes for the future, while also supporting essential administrative and staffing costs to help protect the organisation’s core activity.
Alongside our plans for A Town for Tomorrow Today, we have confirmed a generous National Lottery Awards for All grant toward further community engagement activities during this 70th anniversary year. These will create new opportunities for local people to get involved and celebrate Cumbernauld’s creative spirit, but the funding can only be used if we secure the core support needed to continue operating as an organisation.
New fundraising events are now on sale:

Cumbernauld’s Big Variety Bash (30 November) brings together comedians, musicians and local performers for a night of entertainment hosted by Fred MacAulay. Tickets went on sale on Friday and are already selling fast, so early booking is strongly advised.

Rock Choir for Cumbernauld Theatre (17 January) features uplifting performances from the Cumbernauld and surrounding choirs.

Cumbernauld Folk Club Fundraiser (22 January) offers an evening of live folk and acoustic music in support of the campaign.
Each of these events directly supports our fundraising total, and tickets are available now. You will also find us at the Antonine Shopping Centre every Saturday from 12 to 3pm, where we’ll have a stall for donations and family-friendly activities.
Further applications to trusts and foundations are in progress, and we continue to speak with businesses, stakeholders and public bodies about support. We are particularly keen to hear from local businesses whose staff live in or around Cumbernauld and who may wish to get involved. If you have contacts or relationships that could help, we would love to hear from you.
Thank you for standing with us. Your support keeps this campaign moving.

Did you know Billy Connolly made his theatrical debut at our previous home, The Cottage Theatre? Our very own People’s Theatre Company is creating a brand new production, Connolly’s Cumbernauld Flourish, celebrating his life and his special connection to the town. We’d love your memories to be part of it.
