The Events Casting

We are seeking two actors for our October production of The Events, written by David Greig, directed by Jack Nurse. We are looking for actors who are based in Scotland, in particular the West of Scotland. We also highly encourage submissions from all ethnicities and all gender expressions.

The events

“If I’m going to make a mark on the world I have to do it now.
The only means I have are art or violence.
And I was never any good at drawing.”

When Claire, a priest, survives a mass shooting she sets out on a quest to answer the most difficult question of all: ‘Why?’. The Events is a journey that takes her to the edge of reason, science, politics and faith. Brought to you by

Cumbernauld Theatre Company in association with Wonder Fools, and led by Director Jack Nurse, this is a thrilling, theatrical and visceral new staging of David Greig’s modern classic. It features an exciting collaboration between the professional cast and a Community Choir that has been specially created for this production.

Join us to see this acclaimed play brought to life, and reflect on the complexities of forgiveness, resilience, and the power of community in times of tragedy.

Project Roles

Claire

Claire is in her forties and is a priest. She lives in a cottage by the sea with her partner Catriona. Claire runs a community choir in a hall attached to the church where she works. The choir brought together vulnerable people, old people, young people, asylum seekers, immigrant men and women, young mums and so on. In her words, ‘it was multiculturalism’ – representing the rich diversity of her community.

The play follows Claire after a horrific violent attack against the choir. The event, a mass shooting, is unfathomable and it is the search for answers that drives Claire through the story – asking the most difficult question of all, ‘why?’. She tries to understand what could motivate someone to carry out such an atrocity, speaking to a psychologist, the father of the attacker, a journalist, a politician whose ideology inspired the attack and – in the play’s conclusion – the attacker himself (known only as ‘The Boy’ throughout). This quest for answers for the ultimately unexplainable pushes Claire to the brink of reality and reason. Through Claire’s arc, David Greig invites us to reflect on complexities of forgiveness, resilience, and the power of community in times of tragedy.

There is a community choir being created specifically for this production who the actor playing Claire will collaborate with, alongside the other actor playing The Boy. It is desirable that the actor will have musical experience – in playing a choir leader – but this is not essential. This is a central role in an exciting new production of a modern classic.

The Boy

The Boy is a key role in David Greig’s the Events. The play follows Claire after a horrific violent attack against her community choir. The event, a mass shooting, is unfathomable and it is the search for answers that drives Claire through the story – asking the most difficult question of all, ‘why?’. She tries to understand what could motivate someone to carry out such an atrocity, speaking to a psychologist, the father of the attacker, a journalist, a politician whose ideology inspired the attacked and – in the play’s conclusion – the attacker himself (known only as ‘The Boy’ throughout).

The actor playing the Boy will not only play the perpetrator but also all the other characters Claire interacts with during the story. Therefore, we are looking for someone with a significant range and exceptional craft who would relish the opportunity to tackle the challenges and opportunities this role offers.

There is a community choir being created specifically for this production who the actor playing the Boy will collaborate with, alongside the other actor playing Claire. We’re open to seeing actors in their 20s and early 30s. This is a central role in an exciting new production of a modern classic.
